<div id="articlestory"><p>Four Southeast Valley Methodist church choirs will merge to perform Christmas songs written and arranged by an internationally known composer at a free concert Saturday in downtown Mesa. </p>
<p>Composer John Leavitt of Kansas will conduct the choirs from churches in Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and Sun Lakes at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Mesa, 15 E. First Ave.</p>
<p>Leavitt has written and arranged music including a <i>What Child is This? </i>cantata with seven movements. An orchestra will accompany the choir of about 160 singers on the cantata and Leavitt plans to play organ on other pieces.

<p>The choirs will also perform Leavitt's gospel-type<i> River in Judea </i>piece and the audience will be able to sing hymns at the concert, as well.</p>
<p>"The unique thing is it's with a full orchestra and four distinct choirs coming together with an internationally known composer," First United Methodist Church of Gilbert music director Gregory Gentry said. </p>
<p>The orchestra is made up of musicians from around the Valley.</p>
<p>Adult choirs at the Gilbert church and at Tempe First United Methodist Church performed together two years ago and enjoyed the experience so much they wanted to do it again. This year they're joined by the adult choirs from the First United Methodist Church of Mesa and Sun Lakes United Methodist Church.</p>
<p>"We thought we'd expand it," Warren Dennis, director of music for the Tempe church, said. "All four of our groups have a pretty respectable reputation."</p>
<p>Gentry, who is also choral director at Arizona State University and chorus master for the Phoenix Symphony, befriended Leavitt when the two were graduate students at University of Missouri - Kansas City. Leavitt, who composes sacred and secular works, serves as a regular guest conductor on the MidAmerica Productions - Carnegie Hall Concert Series in New York. </p>
<p>Jeff Harris, director of music at the Mesa church, said he has been in workshops with Leavitt and called him "an incredibly, incredibly fine pianist." Harris is also director of the Sonoran Desert Chorale in Mesa. </p>
<p>Saturday's concert will have something for everyone, the churches' music directors said.</p>
<p>"Some (pieces) are introspective. Others are festive and dance-like," he said. "It's just a great way for each of these choirs to get together to share the music with the community. The only challenge will be making sure we have enough spaces for the bodies."</p>
<p>Cris Evans, director of music at the Sun Lakes church, said her choir is "excited to work with John Leavitt."</p>
<p>"My choir reads music quite well, so it has been a fun challenge," Evans, who also teaches at Hamilton High School, said. "I don't know singers who don't love joining their voices together, especially in music that speaks so beautifully of our faith."</p>
<p>Dennis recommended that the public arrive early Saturday to find parking, which is available at the Mesa Methodist church, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 15 W. First Ave. and on area streets.</p></div>
